The Boss Is Back In Town!

Those of you who lived Penn State in the mid to late 70’s probably recall a young rocker at the beginning of his career playing over three hours in Eisenhower Auditorium in February of ’75.

Hot off the release of his third studio album, “Born to Run,” Bruce “The Boss” Springsteen returned to Rec Hall in April of 1976 and tickets sold out at a feverish pace within three hours.

24 years later, Springsteen returned to Happy Valley in 2000, followed by appearances in 2009 and 2012.

What Have Phi Kaps Been Up To?

Chuck Rothermel ‘80
“I am a member of the Spring 1977 pledge class. I met my wife of almost 35 years at a Phi Kap social that was held with another fraternity. I have been in the oil and gas business my entire career, all in Western Pa, with the last 31 years being based in Pittsburgh.

I graduated in Spring 1980 with a Bachelor’s degree in “Earth Science with Geology Option.”
My son Eric is a junior studying Petroleum Engineering at Marietta College. He has already gained three years of ongoing summer and school experience with a Pittsburgh-based exploration and Production Company and my daughter, Lauren is a first grade teacher in the Moon Township school district.”

Did You Know?

The two chapters of Phi Kappa and Theta Kappa Phi at Penn State merged in 1959. Immediately following the merger, Theta Kappa Phi moved into Phi Kappa’s house at 338 E. Fairmount Ave, where we continue to live today. From that point on we were known as the Pennsylvania Beta Gamma Chapter of Phi Kappa Theta. After almost 80 prosperous years at Penn State, we lost our charter in 1991 due to alcohol violations. During what would be a 5 year absence, 2 other fraternities, Zeta Beta Tau and then Sigma Alpha Mu, occupied our house. Recolonization (finding new members for our fraternity) began in 1994. On November 9, 1996, we rechartered and once again became a part of Penn State’s Greek system. We moved back into our house at 338 on August 15, 1997.
