Gorgeous blue skies and fluffy white clouds from Tom and Ed

Now in the books, our third annual State College Slam was a great success! Lots of reconnecting with guys who haven’t been around in a while, great weather for golf on both Friday and Saturday, and a tasty steak dinner brought this year’s Slam into a new level of accomplishment. While the event itself continues to grow, with a good sized group of 1980s guys back in the fold making the trek back to State College for the first time in a long time, what’s more amazing is how we all had a blast while raising over $11,000 for the Bodnar-Gill Scholarship. In a few hours on the course and over dinner, we grew the fund by 38%! Pretty powerful stuff, and that will go a long way towards getting the fund operational.

This year’s tournament did not disappoint, as most groups carded some nice scores, albeit with help from the Mulligans… for $20, why not improve your shot a few times? With a gorgeous blue sky with fluffy white clouds looking over us (thanks Tom and Ed) and temps in the low 80s and minimal wind, we couldn’t have asked for a better day for the links. The greens were challenging for everyone and kept the scores from getting too out of control. But, that said, we still had some nice performances with Jim Ciccaglione picking up closest to the pin, Paul Volkman ‘82 cranking out the straightest drive of the day, and Bill Martin ‘99 getting all of his driver into the action with a long drive that topped the crowd. Nice efforts, gentlemen!

But our winning foursome came to the Slam ready to get going – and brought up the rear of our group on the course. That group – Matt Thompson ‘85, Dave Aufiero ‘86, Rick Gradone ‘87, and Jon Burd ‘89 – pulled away from the pack to finish at -10 for the tournament, a solid 3 shots better. Our Slam winners walked away with the new version of the “Brother’s Cup” – an 8” silver bowl on a pedestal – in addition to a new tradition: the plaid jacket. Those sport coats were a hot ticket on the town in State College and our winners were looking stylish Saturday night. Bods would have approved, if not interjecting some colorful words to describe the jackets.

All in all, an excellent weekend to get together, celebrate our friends and brothers Tom Bodnar ‘82 and Ed Gil ‘81, and just enjoy the chance to escape our everyday lives and recharge. We enjoyed having you in town and look forward to next year’s Slam, which all are on record that we’ll be bigger and better again for 2019!  Look for our first communication in January 2019 to get things started. But most importantly, Save the Date for 2019 – weekend of June 7-9, 2019.  Further enhancements will include opening Friday up to all participants and having a separate competition for that event.

One last thing: special thanks to both Bud Fischer ‘81 and John Miller ’82 for your help in getting so many fresh faces out to the Slam this year! You both worked the phones, shot emails out, and otherwise got the word out solidly – thank you!
