Bonding in Brotherhood

Thank you to Russell Tanner for participating in this undergraduate Q&A. In it he shares why he joined PKT, his plans for the future, and the best part about meeting and connecting with chapter alumni.

Why did you join Phi Kappa Theta?
During rush I enjoyed the rush events and had a good time hanging out with the brothers. I was invited out to the house a lot and met many of the brothers before I decided to pledge. I knew I wanted to be in a fraternity and this was the best place for me.

What is your best memory so far of being a brother?
My best memory so far is this year's THON. Everything from the canning trips that raised a lot of money to THON weekend, I had a great time helping a great cause. THON weekend was great because it was good spending a lot of time with many of the brothers in the house.

How have you become involved with the house?
Last year I got involved by being our Greek Sing Chair. It was a lot more work than I expected but I had fun doing it. I am now the Vice President and am involved in many things that go on in the house.

How would your life be different if you never joined Phi Kappa Theta?
If I never joined Phi Kappa Theta I would not have a brotherhood with so many friends. Most of my friends at Penn State are in this house and I could not imagine not knowing them and not being associated with a fraternity here.

What are your plans and goals for the future?
My plans for the future are to get my Master's in accounting and CPA and get a job in New York City. I have always dreamed of living there and after college would be a perfect time to do that.

What other activities are you involved with on campus?
I am involved in a THON committee here and that is a lot of fun. I was on the Operations committee, which helped set up and tear down the Bryce Jordan Center for THON. This was a great experience where I met a lot of great people.

Have you had any direct experience with your alumni? If so, what was the best part about it?
I have had some contact with our alumni who have come back to visit and the best part is how they love to come back and stay in the house. It is great to show them improvements to the house and how it has changed since they have graduated.

Why is it important for alumni to remain connected with the active chapter?
It is important to keep a good relationship with alumni because they can help the current chapter in many ways. Not only financially, but they can offer advice from their experience in the fraternity that will help the current chapter have success in everything they do.
